Only Death Is Real: An Illustrated History of Hellhammer and Early Celtic Frost 1981–1985, by Tom Gabriel Fischer, Martin Eric Ain

In the early 1980s in the rural outskirts of Zurich, Switzerland, author Tom Gabriel Fischer assembled the groundbreaking heavy metal band Hellhammer a dark, dramatic force that flew in opposition to his surroundings in every way, even the flashy party-hearty hard rock music of the day. Slowly, Fischer pulled together an ever-larger legion of similar-minded outcasts and adventurers. In a few short years, Hellhammer vanished and Celtic Frost was born, and in this remarkable volume the tale is told with vivid photographs and exacting narrative detail. Only Death Is Real is essential for hundreds of thousands of Hellhammer and Celtic Frost fans worldwide, followers of heavy metal history, and anyone who has ever wondered about the dark, artistic side of metal music. Without a doubt, Fischer is a singular figure responsible for untold innovation, and his book is sacred scripture for understanding the origins of underground heavy metal. Here he explains in intimately human terms how extreme metal was born, detailing the hardships and triumphs he faced bringing Hellhammer and Celtic Frost to reality.

Review

“Fischer’s delving deeper into his past than ever before…very interesting reading. It’s as much a document of metalhead life in the early ’80s as the story of one band.”—MSN Music

"Not just the story of two bands who became genuine linchpins in metal history, it’s also a universal tale about the power of heavy metal to provide a shelter from alienation"—Metal Hammer

“Immaculately presented…a tale of disenfranchised youth with the dedication to follow through with their dreams, against significant odds”—PopMatters

“A proud and regal commemoration of a band that clawed its way to legendary status. Five stars.”—Austin Metal Examiner

“A must-have… authoritative, and the hard work is evident. Only Death Is Real was created by people who respect fans and know what they want.”—Invisible Oranges

“…the heartfelt and open narration from Fischer makes it a genuine asset to the understanding and appreciation of his canon, what was overcome and what was sacrificed in the name of music that has since become classic.”—Terrorizer [10/10 review]

“An astonishing book, both in its subject matter and its presentation… It’s the antithesis of the standard trade paperback rock tome.”—Hellbound[10/10 review]

“Absolutely amazing.”—Deaf Sparrow [5/5 review]

“A killer look into the mind of the band.”—BrooklynVegan

“The apex of extreme metal texts”—deathmetal.org

“Recounts the hard work, unlimited dedication, and immense confidence it took for this group of amateurs to create one of the darkest and most influential metal bands of all time: Hellhammer”—Associated Content

“Highly recommend this to anyone with even the remotest interest in the beginnings of the extreme metal scene” [4.5/5 star review]—MetalCrypt.com

“This is a book about the real Hellhammer, the essence of that group, the aura it carried, and the truly unique spirit of revolution of the times in which it existed. It is a book about a group of outcasts—about persistence, dedication, and an utterly personal vision. I have worked very hard to make sure it will do justice to the work of a number of very unique people who shared the same ideas at a very unique point in time.”—Tom Gabriel Fischer

An Extraordinary Story Of Unswerving Dedication To A Dream
By DK
Fans of Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, new band Triptykon, or any strain of metal or hard rock will already be drawn to this book... and they should be: it's a "birth of a genre" story that will resonate with fans of any/all heavy, dark music. But it's also a lot more. Tom Gabriel Fischer's detailed story of his difficult, painful youth in Switzerland, his discovery and all-consuming love of metal music, and then the development and pursuit of his "I will become a metal musician; I will make this music my life; I WILL persevere" vision is truly moving.

The pictures of band members, associates, and ephemera make the book that much more special as they parallel the written document (and the blunt, honest, often sharply self-critical nature of the comments by ALL who contribute adds much to the reader's experience of the story).

This is a book for fans to race through, and it's also a book to be savored in subsequent readings, perusals of the photos, and so forth. It's what I'd call a large-format hardcover and a truly impressive piece of work--a big, weighty tome, both physically and in its words and pictures.

Hellhammer was crucified by most music journalists in its day. It was also a band that lit fires in the minds and ears of underground metal fans around the world. Now, as Mr. Fischer and his new bandmates in Triptykon are about to release their first album, the time is perfect for this retrospective look at a group that was radical, that was loved and hated, and that spawned many imitators.

Final note: this book should come packaged with Demon Entrails, the 2007 official CD release of Hellhammer's original recordings. Listening to the music as one reads is a great immersive experience.

Black Metal Pioneer Gets His Due!
By Jeff Smith
Anyone who claims to be a fan of extreme metal should know who Thomas Gabriel Fischer (aka:Satanic Slaughter; Tom G.Warrior) is: this man is the driving force behind the genre, hands down: the singer from Darkthrone writes the Foreword with great veneration for the artist. This book was a real trip down memory lane...I first listened to Celtic Frost in 1986 and was hooked for life. Throughout the 1980s, Celtic Frost was the heaviest band around, until Morbid Angel and Death arrived on the scene. Hellhammer was the first incarnation of Mr. Fischer's unending quest to push the limits of what extreme metal was meant to be, and it laid the groundwork for what Celtic Frost was to become.

What is interesting about Mr. Fischer's prose is that it truly is full of conviction: you have no doubt that the man was determined to create a band that satisfied his vision, regardless of the sacrifices made. Fiercely intellectual, Mr. Fischer challenges all around him to accept who they are, and to pursue their dreams; never compromising or bitter, this man is truly a leader and visionary artist, along with co-writer Martin Eric Ain.

If you want to go back to the roots of Black Metal, please do yourself a favor and get this book: the quality and invaluable photos and information alone makes it a treasure. When you have done that, get on Amazon and buy all the CF CDs and the Hellhammer one as well. Finally, this poineer is being able to tell his whole story!

a perfect time capsule unleashed
By Funeral of Gravewurm
This book covers the early years of Tom G Warrior and company's musical entry and rise in the scene of the early 80s. Loaded with tons of rare and killer photos...various line ups and total monologe-style writing by TG Warrior and others make you feel like you are sitting in a room with them, listening to metal and hearing their history unfold in various stories and events. Told with a true sincerity for what actually happened and covering the up-hill battle they faced on a daily basis for Hellhammer to become a force to be reckoned with in the metal scene.
Recommended additional purchase : Hellhammer "Satanic Rites/Triumph of Death/Death Fiend" demos (aka DEMON ENTRAILS - Century Media) and their "Apocalyptic Raids" Mcd
