About the Author
Dr. Sulabha K. Kulkarni started her career in 1977 in the Physics Department of the University of Pune, India, where she established a laboratory in Surface Science, Materials Science and Nanotechnology. Her area of research encompasses metal, semiconductor and oxide nanoparticles, metallic multilayers, hard coatings, gas-solid interactions. She has international collaborations in many countries and attended conferences both as an invited speaker and as a chairperson. Besides being a life member of various science associations in India, Dr. Kulkarni is a fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences (Bangalore), Indian National Science Academy (Delhi), National Academy of Sciences (Allahabad) and Maharashtra Academy of Sciences. Since 2009 Dr Kulkarni is affiliated to the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune.

Good First Intro to Nano

This is an exceptionally good introduction to nano technology. It describes some of the fundamentals and then describes the processes whereby one can create nano materials. The discussion of process techniques is comprehensive and at a level readable by persons seeking an introduction but aware of the key factors.

The author also provides a good level of effort on applications. The coverage of applications is reasonable but the depth is limited since it is an introduction. My focus is in the medical area and I would have liked to see more discussions. For example EU countries ban nano materials in medical apps and it would be useful to understand some of these regulatory limitations.

Finally the author presents a broad set of "Practicals" which are process related insights.

Overall this was the best all around intro to nano I have seen and well worth the purchase.

A Postmodern Essential

This, along with Lyotard's _The Postmodern Condition_, is perhaps one of the most famous works ever written by a Postmodern philosopher. It is well-researched and well-referenced, with many examples of popular culture given as examples in order to aide those having difficulties with the terminology. I, myself, didn't exactly agree with all of it, but I could see Baudrillards point on a lot of things. Judge for yourself, but you'll at least be pleased with the completeness. (However, JB's cultural references sometimes become outdated.)

About the Author
Herbert Zettl is a professor emeritus of the Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts Department at San Francisco State University, where he headed the Institute of International Media Communication and received the California State Legislature Distinguished Teaching Award and the Broadcast Education Association's Distinguished Education Service Award. Prior to joining the SFSU faculty, Zettl worked at KOVR (Stockton-Sacramento) and as a producer-director at KPIX, the CBS affiliate in San Francisco, where he participated in a variety of CBS and NBC network television productions. Because of his outstanding contributions to the television profession, he was elected to the prestigious Silver Circle of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Northern California Chapter. He also is a member of the Broadcast Legends of the NATAS, Northern California Chapter. Zettl is the author of VIDEO BASICS and TELEVISION PRODUCTION HANDBOOK, which are translated into several languages and published internationally. His numerous articles on television production and media aesthetics have appeared in major media journals worldwide. He has lectured extensively on both subjects at universities and professional broadcast institutions both nationally and internationally. In addition, Zettl developed an interactive DVD-ROM, ZETTL'S VIDEOLAB 4.0 (Cengage Learning). His previous CD-ROM version won several prominent awards, including the Macromedia People's Choice Award, the New Media Invision Gold Medal for Higher Education, and Invision Silver Medals in the categories of Continuing Education and Use of Video.

You want to produce better TV/Film?

This book is a MUST read and MUST have for any aspiring filmmakers or TV producers. It is widely used and the only book that attempts to create a foundational theory of media aesthetics. Many production books touch on the theories behind the encoding of messages, but Zettl attempts to explain why audiences react the way they do to mediated productions. The only reason I'm giving this edition 4 stars instead of 5 is because some of the material seems dated, even though this is a brand new edition.

I had to work my way through this text for a senior level film class.

Wow. I'm a senior. I've been working and studying film/video for a number of years. I've never come across a textbook that is often times so overly technical and theoretical ever. I carry a 3.5 GPA. I consider myself a fairly intelligent guy. That being said, I've never endured a book that after reading the day's assigned material I found myself either sound asleep from boredom, or overwhelmed at the complexity of the theories being delivered and rarely thoroughly explained.

Filmmaking is an art. Yes, there are technical aspects to it that you need to know. But, at its essence, it is an art. This book attacks the topic as a series of mathematical equations and scientific formulas.

One last thing .... this book is ridiculously over priced. Beg your professor to find a different text. If they won't bend, save yourself a LOT of money and just rent it.

This book is one of my favorites because its a practical guide on how to make a training program, has numerous and helpful training schedules and it's one of the few books I always come back and read it again and again and especially when I am designing a new running training program.
A must have book for anyone that says he/she is a runner.
Runner's world publication are always on my top list of books, they combine quality and practicality two virtues I love in books as running is concern.
Also if you want to check out my book Thirsty For Health I would really appreciate it.

Some Editing Mistakes but a Good Informative Read

I have the new revised 2009 version of this. I knew this was a compilation of several articles from Runner's World which I actually prefer to a straight-through read. A majority of the information is really pertinent and helpful to a runner like myself. However, there are a few bits of info that seem outdated like maintaining a long stride as opposed to shortening your stride or increasing your cadence as is recommended now. It is also missing some references in the articles, for example it reads, "Physiologists have calculated that any and all running paces are fast enough to put you into the moderate-to-vigorous aerobic zone that delivers health benefits, (For more guidance on pacing, see "The Starting Line," page xx)" It literally says "xx" instead of an actual page number. I've found a handful of these which is bothersome but not a deal breaker for me. It's more annoying than anything. Overall, this is a great book with helpful information as long as you also keep up with more recent running articles and studies.

Great read for beginning runners

I am a beginning runner and thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found the broad range of topics and writers to be a well rounded overview of important aspects to running: training, injury prevention, diet, ..., etc. (see table of contents for all the topics).

I agree with the reviewers who say this book is "just" a collection of articles, you can find all this same info on the Internet, and there is some contradictory advice. However, for the price, it is nice to have all these great articles in one place in hardcopy. Contradictory advice? Talk to experts in any field and you'll get contracting advice. This reflects that different advice is best for different people and that some experts disagree (e.g. 1 experts says train 6 days a week, another says train 3 days a week). (Experts here meaning trainers, sports doctors, and runners who break world records and win big races).

I would give this 5 stars except for the title may be misleading. The title sounds more encyclopedic but the book is really a nicely organized collection of great articles written over the years by expert trainers, doctors and runners.

About the Author

Richard Twyman is a scientific writer and lecturer in molecular biology and biotechnology, focusing on developmental and cell biology, gene transfer to microbes, animals and plants, transgenics, genetic manipulation, genomics, proteomics and systems biology. He has worked extensively in these topic areas and has written all manner of articles ranging from primary research papers and reviews in high-impact journals to some of the most popular scientific textbooks in the world, including Principles of Gene Manipulation (now nearly 30 years in print and in its 8th edition). He is also a contributor for Human Molecular Genetics (now 10 years in print and in its 3rd edition).

After working as a research scientist and scientific writer for 10 years, Richard set up a scientific management consultancy in 2001 which has been very successful, with a client base now including many research institutes (e.g. Fraunhofer IME, RWTH University of Aachen, University of Verona, St Georges Hospital Medical School, University of Lleida, University of York, University of Oxford, University of Cambridge), prominent public institutions (e.g. Wellcome Trust, Spanish National Research Council), publishers (e.g. Garland Press, Taylor & Francis, Wiley-VCH, Ashley Publications, Blackwell Science, Elsevier) international research consortia (e.g. Pharma-Planta, Smart-Cell, Comofarm) and industrial customers (e.g. Sartorius-Stedim Biotech, Dow AgroScience). About the Author

William Birdthistle is a Professor of Law at Chicago-Kent College of Law, where he specializes in investment funds and corporate law. Previously, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Diarmuid F. O'Scannlain of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and practiced law at Ropes & Gray LLP. Birdthistle was born in Cork, Ireland and raised in Libya and Malaysia. He came the United States to attend Duke University and Harvard Law School, where he served as managing editor of the Harvard Law Review. Birdthistle lives in Chicago with his wife and children.

Birdthistle offers an easy-to-read guide to the investment fund industry and the way we save now. The title is very fitting. It is a refreshing look into the investment industry and written for the average individual. We all need to focus on retiring and this book is almost a step-by-step map to help you avoid the pitfalls of obscurity in the financial world. If you want to save for your retirement, then this is a good book to read to help you better navigate the landscape. Sobering read and great information, highly recommend.

In the vein of "The Big Short," "More Money Than God," and "Flash Boys," William Birdthistle's "Empire of the Fund" is a must have for anyone intrigued by high stakes financial problems. Similar to the aforementioned titles, "Empire of the Fund" peppers the reader with delightful and punchy anecdotes about the finance industry. However, "Empire of the Fund" is not exclusively anecdotal. "Empire of the Fund" has a unique balance of storytelling and technical depth. Where other titles fail to make the technical finance palatable, or, leave the reader with unanswered questions, "Empire of the Fund" sufficiently explains investment funds in a satisfying way. "Empire of the Fund" is a well timed and elegant exposition of funds, sure to resolve the financial confusion of Andy Haldane and common citizen alike.

Easily one of the most informative books I have ever read in the field of finance. Before reading this book I knew next to nothing about the mutual fund industry. And it was not until after I finished the book that I realized how dire our financial situation truly is. Birdthistle tackles the issue head on and addresses everything that is wrong with the way Americans save now. The best thing about this book is that its intended audience is every working American; no financial prowess needed.
