About the Author

Michael T. Madigan received his B.S. in Biology and Education from Wisconsin State University Stevens Point (1971) and his M.S. (1974) and Ph.D. (1976) in Bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. His graduate research was on the hot spring bacterium Chloroflexus in the laboratory of Thomas Brock. Following a three-year postdoctoral in the Department of Microbiology, Indiana University, Mike moved to Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he has been a professor of microbiology for 32 years. He has coauthored Biology of Microorganisms since the fourth edition (1984) and teaches courses in introductory microbiology, bacterial diversity, and diagnostic and applied microbiology. In 1988 Mike was selected as the Outstanding Teacher in the College of Science and in 1993, the Outstanding Researcher. In 2001 he received the SIUC Outstanding Scholar Award. In 2003 he received the Carski Award for Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching from the American Society for Microbiology. Mike’s research is focused on bacteria that inhabit extreme environments, and for the past 12 years he has studied the microbiology of permanently ice-covered lakes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica. In addition to his research papers, he has edited a major treatise on phototrophic bacteria and served for over a decade as chief editor of the journal Archives of Microbiology. He currently serves on the editorial board of Environmental Microbiology. Mike’s nonscientific interests include forestry, reading, and caring for his dogs and horses. He lives beside a peaceful and quiet lake with his wife, Nancy, five shelter dogs (Gaino, Snuffy, Pepto, Peanut, and Merry), and four horses (Springer, Feivel, Gwen, and Festus).

 

John M. Martinko received his B.S. in Biology from Cleveland State University. He then worked at Case Western Reserve University, conducting research on the serology and epidemiology of Streptococcus pyogenes. His doctoral work at the State University of New York at Buffalo investigated antibody specificity and antibody idiotypes. As a postdoctoral fellow, he worked at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York on the structure of major histocompatibility complex proteins. Since 1981, he has been in the Department of Microbiology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale where he was Associate Professor and Chair, and Director of the Molecular Biology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry Graduate Program. He retired in 2009, but remains active in the department as a researcher and teacher. His research investigates structural changes in major histocompatibility proteins. He teaches an advanced course in immunology and presents immunology and host defense lectures to medical students. He also chairs the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee at SIUC. He has been active in educational outreach programs for pre-university students and teachers. For his educational efforts, he won the 2007 SIUC Outstanding Teaching Award. He is also an avid golfer and cyclist. John lives in Carbondale with his wife Judy, a high school science teacher.

 

David A. Stahl received his B.S. degree in Microbiology from the University of Washington, Seattle, later completing graduate studies in microbial phylogeny and evolution with Carl Woese in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. Subsequent work as a postdoctoral fellow with Norman Pace, then at the National Jewish Hospital in Colorado, focused on early applications of 16S rRNA-based sequence analysis to the study of natural microbial communities. In 1984 Dave joined the faculty at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, holding appointments in Veterinary Medicine, Microbiology, and Civil Engineering.  In 1994 he moved to the Department of Civil Engineering at Northwestern University, and in 2000 returned to his alma mater, the University of Washington, Seattle, as a professor in the Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Microbiology. Dave is known for his work in microbial evolution, ecology, and systematics–receiving the 1999 Bergey Award and the 2006 Procter & Gamble Award in Applied and Environmental Microbiology from the ASM.  His main research interests are the biogeochemistry of nitrogen and sulfur compounds and the microbial communities that sustain these nutrient cycles.  His laboratory was first to culture ammonia-oxidizing Archaea, a group now believed to be the main mediators of this key process in the nitrogen cycle.  He has taught several courses in environmental microbiology, is one of the co-founding editors of the journal Environmental Microbiology, and has served on many advisory committees.  Outside teaching and the lab, Dave enjoys hiking, bicycling, spending time with family, reading a good science fiction book, and, with his wife Lin, renovating an old farmhouse on Bainbridge Island, Washington.

 

David P. Clark grew up in Croydon, a London suburb. He won a scholarship to Christ’s College, Cambridge, where he received his B.A. degree in Natural Sciences in 1973. In 1977 he received his Ph.D. from Bristol University, Department of Bacteriology, for work on the effect of cell envelope composition on the entry of antibiotics into Escherichia coli. He then left England on a postdoctoral studying the genetics of lipid metabolism in the laboratory of John Cronan at Yale University. A year later he moved with the same laboratory to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. David joined the Department of Microbiology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1981. His research has focused on the growth of bacteria by fermentation under anaerobic conditions. He has published numerous research papers and graduated over 20 Masters and Doctoral students. In 1989 he won the SIUC College of Science Outstanding Researcher Award. In 1991 he was the Royal Society Guest Research Fellow at the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Sheffield University, England. In addition to Brock Biology of Microorganisms, David is the author of four other science books: Molecular Biology Made Simple and Fun, now in its fourth edition; Molecular Biology: Understanding the Genetic Revolution; Biotechnology: Applying the Genetic Revolution; and Germs, Genes, & Civilization: How Epidemics Shaped Who We Are Today. David is unmarried and lives with two cats, Little George, who is orange and very nosey, and Mr. Ralph, who is mostly black and eats cardboard.

A Grad Student's Perspective

This is hands down the best general microbiology textbook on the market. Below, I'll explain why. (And I will also defend the book against some of the more ridiculous comments):

1) Let's be honest. Some students who read textbooks aren't too bright or motivated. So you should completely ignore ANYBODY who says the book was worthless. He/She was probably frustrated with the class they were in, and blamed the prof, their TA, the book, and life in general for getting a bad grade or having a bad time. Common sense tells us that a book that has gone through 11 editions is way above average. Most textbooks don't make it past the 1st or 2nd ed.

2) This book is not meant to delve into excruciating detail. While the book does contatin a LOT of detail on some topics, most aren't that detailed. The reason is because it's an introductory text. If you want more information, then buy a book that focuses on that one area. So, criticisms that say the book was "too general" are silly.

3) The book does a great job of overviewing every possible topic under the sun related to microbiology. The book covers basic cell biology, foundations of microbiology, molecular biology, diversity, metabolism, immunology, pathogenesis, disease, and even a little biotechnology.

4) It's true that the book could be organized a little better. In particular, it's frustrating to have to flip back and forth between chapters on metabolic diversity and prokaryotic diversity. However, I can't really suggest a better way to do it.

5) As an undergrad, I used this book in two different courses, and enjoyed it both times. As a grad student, I still find myself referring back to it on occasion.

In summary, if you're looking for a good introductory text to microbiology, you're not going to find anything better than this.

Just What a Textbook Should Be

I actually own the 12th edition of this textbook, so I can only assume that the 13th edition is even better.

This book has an incredible amount of information that is well organized and easy to understand. It has lots of great photographs, charts and diagrams, and TONS of real-world examples and descriptions of bacteria species and their effects in the human world. You don't need to read it cover to cover to understand what's going on in any one of the chapters - short recaps of information are given to remind you of what you should already know in order to understand what you're reading.

Fantastic textbook that I would recommend to any biologist, microbiologist, or bacteriologist, student or professional.

First of all, I am not the type of person who likes to read. That being said, this book is very well written and very easy to understand. For the first time ever in my life, I actually enjoyed reading this book. Even if you're not taking any microbiology class, I'd still recommend this book, if you're interested in science at all.

About the Author

Dr. Siamak Cyrus Khojasteh received his BS from University of California at Berkeley and his PhD from University of Washington in Medicinal Chemistry under the direction of Dr. Sidney D. Nelson.  Dr. Khojasteh leads the Metabolism efforts at Genentech (South San Francisco) and leads a team of about 20 scientists and prior to that he was a Senior Research Scientist at Pfizer (Groton, CT).  His research interest is mechanism of biotransformation particularly with formation of reactive metabolites by P450 or non-P450 enzymes.  

 

Harvey Wong graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Ph.D. in Pharmacokinetics and Biopharmaceutics.  Following graduation, he worked at the DuPont Pharmaceutics Company followed by Bristol-Myers Squibb in the area of Neuroscience Drug Discovery.  Currently, Harvey is a Senior Scientist in the Department of Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics at Genentech, Inc. working in the areas of oncology and immunology.  He is involved in pharmacokinetic modeling and defining preclinical PK-PD relationships for drug candidates in both therapeutic areas. Harvey has published over 70 publications and abstracts.

 

Dr. Cornelis E.C.A. Hop is supervising the Small Molecule Drug Metabolism & Pharmacokinetics Department at Genentech (South San Francisco) and leads a team of about 55 scientists involved in acquisition and interpretation of ADME data in support of drug discovery and development.  Before that he was a senior director at Pfizer (Groton, CT) and a Senior Research Fellow at Merck (Rahway, NJ).  Dr. Hop has extensive experience in ADME sciences and biotransformation, PK prediction and bioanalysis in particular.  He has authored more than 100 publications in refereed journals and several book chapters and made more than 50 external oral presentations at conferences and universities.

Wonderful guide, very useful as a quick reference or crash course in DMPK. Great coverage of important concepts, thoughtfully written an assembled, and easy to follow for those of us without formal training in pharmacokinetics.

Gorgeous, heartbreaking, and heart-mending

There are so many things to love about Always Second Best. This is a multifaceted story if ever there was one. It broke my heart, halfway attempted to put it back together, and then broke it all over again.

Always Second Best has Romeo & Juliet vibes for the modern YA audience, with a very different ending. It's a novel of love and of loss that shows us it's okay--even important--to question the things we feel so certain that we want. And same with relationships. Familial, romantic, platonic... Sometimes relationships seem solid in their standing, whichever that standing may be. Love. Hate. Distrust. But by the end, nothing's exactly where it began. Forgiveness and perspective and knowledge are powerful things.

This is a book about discovering that no family is perfect and sometimes what may seem unforgivable is, actually, possible to let go of. Or at least to try.

Nick and Emilia. Nick and Em. I already loved them from A Summer Like No Other--which, you don't have to read to enjoy this book, but you should read it anyway.

"You're scared. But you don't need to be. Use this fear to show them who you are."

Nick is a hell of a guy. I loved him in the prequel and I love him even more now. Even when things between Em and he are rocky, he remains a rock in the way that he's there for her. This is a second chance romance you'll be rooting from from page one. (Or, if you've read the prequel, from before the book even begins.)

And Em. Man, life throws Em everything it can in this story and she stays on her feet. She's strong and determined and is given to gentle infusions of humor that make even the hardest scenes a little easier to bear.

The plot twists and winds through unexpected loops, one after another after another. Grief piles on top of grief. This book will slay you at times, but it will also put you as close to back together as it can. Which won't be all the way. Because Always Second Best is the kind of book that will stick with you, deep in your chest, for a long time after reading.

A Lovely New Adult "Every(wo)man"!

Seventeen year old ballerina Emilia Moretti has felt second best her whole life, and she has decided that she is going to show the world that she can be the best. (The world mainly being her birth mother and her ex best friend/summer fling.)

"But when everything went crashing faster than a dancer missing his or her landing, I still had hope. I dreamed he'd come and knock at my door, that he'd tell me he was sorry, that he'd fight for me."​

Like most teenage girls (and honestly, us adults as well!), Emilia longs to be sought after and fought for. She bases much of her self worth on the idea of, more than being the best AT something, being the best and first choice FOR someone.

Because this is such a relevant topic to women of every age the world over, I was thrilled to see Nowodazkij handle it in such a beautiful way.

"Being first doesn't always mean the first place on the podium. Being first should be about learning what it is that makes you happy and pursuing that dream and not giving up and staying true to yourself. Being first should be about the journey."

Much more than a romance, Always Second Best chronicles a girl's journey to self-appreciation, recognition of self-worth, and realization of her place in the world. It is, in many ways, a sort of Every(wo)man story, and I can honestly say that it spoke to me on many levels.

Secrets revealed, heartbreak and love.

Book three in the Broken Dreams series. Best to read A Summer Like No Other before this to really follow along.

Eight months after their summer together, Emilia and Nick find themselves tiptoeing around each other. For Emilia, being around Nick is just too difficult for her because she's in love with him. Nick flitting from one girl to the next has crushed her. She just doesn't know why they only had one summer. She tries to focus on her dancing, since the showcase is coming up and helping her Nonna out at the restaurant. Anything to keep her mind off of Nick. Not to mention all the heartache she's suffering through because of her father and the circumstances of her birth. People in Emilia's life aren't what they seem and there are many more secrets to come out. Will Emilia learn what's most important to her?

I devoured this book in hours. My heart broke for Emilia, but I loved how determined she was to figure out the truth. Standing up to a family member is never easy. Nick finally grew up and became a man in my eyes. Dancing was his passion, but he wanted to make sure he was doing it for the right reasons. I couldn't ask for anything more in the series.

Many people in an organization focus on managing the boss rather than doing their own job. What better way to manage the boss than to constantly seek her/his guidance on everything? Then, the boss can be flattered that you want his/her help, and will also take the blame if anything goes wrong. Insecure bosses like to be involved, so that fewer "errors" occur.
This wonderful book points out that no one can learn without making errors. Also, if you and your subordinate are doing the same job, one of you is superfluous. Also, the time taken to teach someone else to do the task is usually much less over a year or two than the time taken to help someone learn the task.
The key problem is that we all like to fall back on doing what we are comfortable with and are good at rather than new challenges where we are not so competent. Banish that feeling!

The one minute manager's symbol, a one-minute readout from the face of a modern digital watch, is intended to remind each of us to take a minute out of our day to look into the faces of the people we manage. The monkey manger's symbol a stressed manager overwhelmed by a desk full of problems, is intended to remind us to constantly discipline ourselves to invest our time on the most vital aspects of management rather than dilute our effectiveness by "doing more efficiently those things that shouldn't be done in the first place." What follows, is a story of a manger who worked long hours and never seemed to get caught up with all the work he had to do. He learned about monkey management and how not to take initiative away from his people so they can care for and feed their own monkeys. In the process, he learned to be more effective in dealing with his own manager and the demands of his organization. The performance of his department drastically improved, as did the prospects for his career. The authors hope is that you will use what you learn in this book to make a difference in your life and the lives of the people you interact with at work and at home.

I have a couple other One Minute Manager books and was actually required to read them in college. I didn't have this one in my book collection so I decided to add it. I often reference the managing your monkey's book so happy to have it. Great read! I recommend it to young people up to adults, I actually just recommended it to a stressed out colleague in her 60's.

Great book on The C4, Not too technical or a Go To end all source,The photography is great and option information is good. I wish there would have been more Pictures and A Color Chart showing the different colors, There is Options discussed for each year and colors available for each year, The ZR-1 (1990-1995) should be Referred to As ZR-1 not ZR1(2009-),Also no Mention of There being 1983 Corvettes(Prototypes,Super Rare) and 1988-1989 Corvette Challenge cars,Other than that It is a Short but nonetheless great book.

More than I expected even though I have a lot of Corvette books! Excellent accuracy on specifications & facts.
Being a photographer I really enjoyed the great photography work & owning a C4 Corvette I could not recommend this book enough to anyone that likes Corvettes!

Great Text

This is a well written text that I feel should be required for all DPT students and entry-level muscuoskeletal clinicians to read. With emerging literature stating that derangements may be as common in the extremities as they are in the spine, it will allow our patients to get classified and treated quicker. The method just makes sense! Robin McKenzie was definately ahead of his time.
