About the Author
Paul Moon lectures in New Zealand history at the Auckland University of Technology and has a growing reputation as an original and well-informed historian. I thought this book was good - particularly the first 2/3rds

I'm Maori - staunchly so. I thought this book was good - particularly the first 2/3rds. The practice is abhorrent (my ancestors engaged in it with gusto so its part of my heritage and I'm more than equipped to make this statement). Interestingly by the turn of the 19th century Maori writers of the day were openly scornful of 'kaitangata' practices that their own grandfathers and fathers had been part of.

I have no patience for critics who accuse the author of cultural relativism, cultural appropriation, cultural misunderstanding, and even racism. These are not critiques of the book but rather a sign of the accusers discomfort with the truth they are confronted with. My ancestors ate people - that's what they did. And the practice was widespread and a well integrated part of the culture. You can't gloss over it or try and put a spin that somehow makes the practice 'ok'. They didn't engage in the practice for spiritual reasons or whatever. I'm sure no victim of kaitangata went into the hangi saying 'at least I'm being eaten for cultural and spiritual reasons'.

I did struggle a little with section 5 onwards. The argument seemed over reached re 'revisionist apostasy'. But other than that a good and thought provoking read.

BTW we Maori are big enough and tough enough to take a bit of academic critique of our (old) practices.

A balanced and well argued account on Maori cannibalism. The testimony of the numerous witnesses, along with the Maori oral histories, and the archaeological proof, should surely challenge any naive celebration of indigenous culture.

Thought Provoking

This is a thought provoking read and probably not for someone wanting only entertainment. However, it provides a probably more authentic look at early Maori life than many of the new age revisionist views, which can tend to portray some sort of lost idyllic utopia. It is food for thought as to how much the hardships and horrors of the past may subconsciously still be affecting Maori to this day and manifesting in some of the social problems that are evident in contemporary New Zealand.

Torin Ellis is a human capital strategist, an interview architect, and the founder of the Torin Ellis Brand. As a recruiter and career development coach for over 16 years, Torin Ellis has performed thousands of search assignments and successfully placed hundreds of high-performing professionals in the $150,000-to-$300,000 salary range.

Torin conducts career development bootcamps and group career coaching for colleges and universities providing students invaluable career strategies and consultation. Torin has been contracted by Monster.com to be a part of their traveling speaking team. He's also been hired to speak at the Department of Labor's "Youth Opportunity" programs all around the country. "Rip the Resume", the blueprint to a successful work life!

This book by Torin Ellis needs to be "required reading" for anyone navigating through the corporate world.
Young and old, it's never too late to get your career started or rejuvenated, and Mr. Ellis so eloquently provides the blueprint for a successful preparation kit to putting you in the position of power and prosperity.

"Don't run and hide from questions that cause you to stop and think. It is not always about what you know, but often about how you react to situations that you are faced with. Don't try to run around the question, nor should you provide a superficial response. Star candidates own the conversation process and are able to authoritatively deliver a positive or negative response." (Excerpt from Rip the Resume)

This is one of the most powerful and genuine expressions of thought that I have read in a long time.
Many prospective candidates hinder themselves by not being able to articulate a tough question, and giving superficial answers to "not be judged". Many times, we are justified in our actions and experiences with previous organizations, but the environment and culture of the organization was not willing to reason or accept an alternative opinion, or maybe just resistant to someone not "falling in line with the status quo".

Be honest, and be "walk in your truth"!

I am encouraging everyone to buy at least two copies, for yourself and anyone else you love who is having a hard day at work and feeling under appreciated!

My initial reaction after having read Torin Ellis' RIP the Resume was 'I wish I would have had this book 20 years ago." This book may very well be the single most invaluable resource to today's job seekers.
While reading this book, it is apparent that the author's passion and purpose are to help others realize how to tell the story of themselves to recruiters and prospective employers. Ellis stresses the idea that the interview is a conversation, and he models this in how he writes and presents his knowledge and understanding of the job search process. He has a conversation with his readers in which he empowers them, inspires them, and empathizes with them without sugarcoating the realities of the hard work that a potential candidate must be willing to put in, in order to be the hero who gets the job.
The book is structured in purposeful steps that include being clear about the posted job description, creating an outstanding resume, making yourself stand out in a pool full of applicants, the interview itself and spot on advice about how to follow up after an interview. The author's genuine concern for the reader and his clients is refreshing as it is reassuring that the human experience is still of importance in the marketplace.
Throughout the book, the author offers his contact information and additional resources to help guide the candidate through all aspects of the job search process. I never felt like Torin Ellis wrote this book to make a profit. I felt he wrote it because he is invested in making people realize their full potential and helping them understand the steps of how to get there. It struck me often as I read all 96 pages, that he was not just offering wisdom about how to get a job, but first hand experience about how to live a fulfilling life.
If you are graduating or about to graduate from college, get this book! If you are looking to switch careers, get this book! If you want to move up in your field, get this book! If you have always been scared of taking a risk in pursuing your ideal job, GET THIS BOOK! I promise you, you will find it has been your mediocrity in the job search process that has been holding you back!

It's more than a book about a resume!!!

I purchased this book thinking that I just wanted to support a fellow entrepreneur and hoping that I would get a little something out of it. I got a bit more than something, I got a whole lot. Particularly, I got a completely new way of thinking about myself and my accomplishments in the workforce thus far in my life. I went through the book with my resume in hand and just about everything wrong to do on a resume, I had done. It's not that my resume was horrible, it was that it didn't stand out at all nor did it give an accurate representation of my skillset in terms of what I have to offer a company. Don't just read the book, pull out your resume and actively take part in the exercises throughout to learn more about marketing/presenting yourself and to drastically increase your chances in the job market. If you follow and apply the guidelines in this book your chances of success in your job search or at your current job will increase.
