A catalyst..

This book was a catalyst where I wasn't looking for one. After the first 35 pages a light bulb started lighting up...and I feared my life was about to change. I've never written a book review, but after reading what Jonathon learned in his 3 + years of researching factory farming, I had to tell others to read it. He provides serious, horrific and real information. I never knew about factory farming until I read his book and googled 'factory farming' on the web. It was all over from there. I started watching those videos on what we do to animals-the ones we don't want to see-and I could not stomach another bite of an animal again. I loved meat, ate it easily 3xday for all of my life, grew up near those green pastures in northern California where cows graze all day. Wow. Was I disconnected and fooled...

What I felt, was that he did not preach about not eating animals. He presented information that I could personally relate to and grasp. For me, Jonathon felt like a messenger...where many have failed to bring light to what humans are systematically doing to animals every moment of every day. He provided very important information about 99% of the animals I used to buy and eat for my family and friends. I had no idea that the US alone consumes 10 billion animals PER YEAR. I finally woke up. One chicken has 2 wings(that they never use)--how many chicken wings come in a basket at a restaurant-6? 12? 24? I used to throw meat away after getting full. I was throwing away a life-a wasted one who suffered in life and in death. What frightened me more about this book is why is an author bringing this info to me? Where are the ongoing news specials on this?

Jonathon's personal tone, statistical/historical data, research team, true accounts from the field, letters, etc., left me no choice than to agree with him. Of course, he is not a farm owner, hasn't worked on a farm, and can't come from a place of truly understanding 'farming'. And he doesn't shun farming, he actually helped me realize that the farming I thought ALL animals came from--humane ones--are actually a miniscule percentage of all farms. His writing is heartwarming, but gut-wrenching. His occasional wit about the insanity of factory farming made me laugh quietly, but kept me awake at night thinking & fretting.

Eating Animals forced me to realize the terrifying component of being lied to by these factory farms and the megacorporations that support them. I used to pay extra for organic milk & cage free eggs because I believed in Horizon Farms. I thought I was making a better choice for the animals. Ultimately, the author woke me up from a deep, deep sleep. As he eloquently presents about turkeys, how can we celebrate 'thanks' and 'family' or whatever tradition you have on Thanksgiving while the main course never saw the sun, felt the earth, a breath of fresh air, had his beak seared off with a hot blade and no pain killers, lived on top of thousands of other turkey's and their excrement, thrown into trucks for transport hundreds of miles without food or water, and never had one true moment of 'love.' If having a better understanding of what love means to you, read this book.

To the point...

It is very hard to write a review of this book without expressing one's own view of the ethics of meat eating, as most of the reviews - and many of the comments to some of these reviews - demonstrate. In fact, it is impossible to really separate the two when discussing a book that is both so personal in its narrative, and relentlessly focused on universal eating habits. My review is no different.

Taking a stab at the book itself: I am not familiar with Foer's fictional works, but his background is evident as he lends the whole subject a compelling narrative and style that really make "Eating Animals" quite a page-turner (I read it in a day and a half). To those familiar with this debate, the statistics are not really new, nor are the horror stories of factory farming. What is new is the personalization of his approach (I too am a father and could relate to the decisions he faces), and, most effectively, his unflinching, relentless, repetitious focus on the reality of consuming 99% of the available meat today: The environmental damage, the suffering, the waste, the lies and corruption, the exploitation, the veil of secrecy amongst the industrial farming concerns. It is Foer's relentless focus of these central issues and his unwillingness to avoid the obvious question (How can it be ethical to consume meat under these conditions?) that I believe distinguish this book and make it most effective.

So what does this mean to this reviewer in terms of his personal habits? Well, I am a long-time consumer of meat. I love everything about it in terms of taste, texture, variety, preparation, culture, etc. I am a serious hobbyist-cook, and meat has played a central role in what I prepare...Though largely tolerant/indifferent to others' eating habits, I have been largely turned off by the vegetarian and (especially) vegan communities as a whole. I have long viewed veganism as another example of our (U.S.) puritanical tradition of extreme reaction and self-denial to complex moral issues, married up with our (U.S.) lack of a strong, traditional food culture (go to somewhere like France or Spain, or Vietnam, and the difference is night and day). That said, when I read "The Omnivore's Dilemma" a few years ago, I did change many of my habits, and my purchases became almost exclusively organic for ethical reasons. However, like Pollan, I continued to eat meat, though shifting to more ethically raised and killed sources.

Now having recently completed Foer's book, I have yet to consume meat, and really this is because Foer's central "decision" is so unavoidable: Either you don't eat meat, or you support a lot of animal pain and suffering. I believe meat-eating can be ethical, but right now, in our world, it is really just too screwed up and sick to be patronized. So bringing together the book itself and my personal reaction to it, I would say this book is profoundly "impactful" (not a word - I know), if my reaction is representative of anything. I am still contemplating meat consumption for the long term, as deep down I think there is something fundamentally "not right" and borderline neurotic about complete self-denial of meat - I mean, it is so closely tied to our evolution and culture, and its presence is strong in almost every single human society, indigenous or otherwise. But until this settles in my mind, it feels better to just say "no". And ultimately, how it "feels" is probably going to be the ultimate deciding factor for me, because I don't believe ethical debates are ultimately solved through pure logic...Foer seems to say this as well...

I do have one big issue with "Eating Animals", and that is with regards to the future of killing animals for food (which I doubt will ever go away): How will the more acceptable animal food operations that Foer admires - like Frank Reese's turkey farm - ever develop into something beyond the fringe, when ethically minded people go straight to non-meat consumption? It does seem a bit disingenuous to promote these meat farms and then say you will not patronize them, as (SPOILER ALERT) Foer does.

So I am no longer eating meat for some time (maybe forever) as a result of this book, which is I believe is a testament to the power of the author's words. My only pressing issue now is what do I feed my cat?

changing my ways

I wholeheartedly recommend this book. I identified with Foer as a person who really tries to eat ethically, but whose weaknesses often get the best of him. I've had strong intuitions that there is something wrong with Meat today, but, like Foer reports of his own journey, those intuitions have not been strong enough for me to really change what I eat. The woman in my life, by contrast, has been a vegetarian for over a decade and never wavers. Of the many changes I've made to accommodate our relationship, giving up meat was never one of them. I've generally let the smell of bacon silence any discomfort I had with meat. That is, until reading Eating Animals. Foer's personal narrative spoke to me more than any of the many exposes on factory farming slyly sent my way. At the same time, Eating Animals left me far more informed than I was before ... It's the standard cliché, but I really couldn't put the book down. In place of the didactic or moralistic, Foer welcomes the reader into his life and his story. Foer is his own main character, and his own self-examination inspires the same. You won't be the same after reading it.

An Impressive, Comprehensive Collection of Jack London's Works

Delphi Classics is correct: As of this writing, all four of the reviews linked to this ebook on Amazon.com are for the wrong product--not Delphi's wonderful Complete Works of Jack London. Though I don't know enough about Jack London's writings to say whether this is EVERYTHING the man ever wrote, I can vouch for the comprehensive nature of this nicely presented and formatted works collection. All 197 short stories are here and, as far as I know, all of the novels, plays, etc. It's a huge collection but well organized and easily navigated. I can't imagine finding a better Jack London collection for the Kindle anywhere. Delphi has similar collections for many other classic authors whose works are now in the public domain. They are a fairly new company, but it's clear to me they want to become the leading provider of public-domain classics for the Kindle (at least for readers who like these comprehensive complete-works collections). At $2.99 each, they're an incredible value.

I should also mention that Delphi has excellent customer service, and they take quality control seriously. For example, there are some minor formatting issues in the first novel of this collection (The Cruise of the Dazzler). Many words containing apostrophes contain an extra space. I contacted Delphi about this, and they sent me a corrected file directly by e-mail within two or three days. I was very impressed. I highly recommend this and other Delphi Classics works collections.

Can't go wrong

Delphi Classics is fast becoming my go-to publisher for all books in public domain. The best writers, conviently compiled, and attractively packaged along with letters, unpublished works and illustrations. If the body of work is not complete (i.e., not in public domain) the publisher is upfront about it. The price cannot be beat and the works are easily navigable. The only quibble I have about the London compilation is that the short stories are inexplicably difficult to navigate so I could not verify that a particular favorite was included before purchase. London is the greatest American writer since Twain (piss on you, Hemingway!), and you cannot go wrong here.

Complete Works of Jack London

I have read several of Jack London's novels over the years. I thoroughly enjoyed all of these. When I received the complete works I was somewhat daunted to realise that there were so many books. When did Jack have time to go on all of those adventures whilst he was writing so many novels.

What I have learnt, is that Jack London must have had a complex mind and a dominating personality. Whilst I don't agree with some of his political and apparently racist views (by today's standards), I am going to enjoy reading the rest of his novels and stories.

Cut the repeated intros and credits!

I'd give this five stars but the noisy intro music at the beginning and credits following each title can drive one to distraction. They add about a minute to each title. The book is also very good but, why such small type? To save a buck in production costs? It's as small, if not smaller than newsprint.

Mr. Freeman is an excellent instructor. I've picked up a lot of knowledge in the very short time I've had the videos.

But Focal Press, CUT THE REPEATED INTROS AND CREDITS!!!!! Good grief, one at the beginning and end of the entire course is enough!!!

The running time for each chapter includes intro credits, a summary and end credits, which take about one and a half to two minutes depending on the chapter.

The book is fairly small, just big enough to fit the DVDs inside the cover and about 80 pages. It is intended as a quick reference of what is covered on the DVDs. Each chapter on the DVD is given a two page summary in the book.

Overall, I found the content to be well presented but quite basic. The repeated intros and credits on every chapter really diminish the viewing experience.

But what did he see on the way and what thoughts might have inspired him? How did his journey compare with that of modern pilgrims? Katherine Lack skilfully weaves together the handful of surviving medieval pilgrim accounts with evidence from contemporary records to recreate the journey Sutton might have made in the spring of 1423.

Dr Katherine Lack is a freelance writer and lecturer in church history . She is the author of The Eagle and the Dove, the story of the Celtic saint, Columbanus Triangle, 2000. She lives in Whitbourne, Worcestershire.

Reconstructing history

In 1986, the Worcester Pilgrim burial site was accidentally discovered in the Cathedral. A 15th century man was found buried under the tower, dressed for a pilgrim journey. This unusual find inspired Lack, a scholar in church history, to become a historical detective and make some guesses about his identity and about the trip which defined his life so much that he wanted to be buried in its symbolic costume.

Lack tentatively identifies the pilgrim as Robert Sutton, an educated urban tradesman from the early 15th century who had apparently made the long arduous trek from Worcester to Compostela in Spain. She then reconstructs what his probable journey would have been, going so far as to include possible timeframes and the corresponding physical and political conditions that would have been part of the trip.

The book is structured so that it largely focuses on the trip itself. In the first three chapters, she covers the identity of the pilgrim and his potential motivations. From that point in the book forward, the book is structured as steps in the pilgrimage-- going from England, to Brittany, to Armagnac France, to Navarre and finally arriving at the Camino in Castile.

As a historical reconstruction, the book is fascinating. She brings an obvious wealth of research to the reader and weaves a convincing and concrete narrative about what the Compostela could have been like for Sutton. I enjoyed and applauded her use of small details which did not distract from the text and added enough verasimilitude to keep the read smooth and fast. Lack makes an effort to capture the emotional side of pilgrimage as well, in a way that resonated as realistic and helped provide a character arc to the depicted journey.

Unfortunately, if you are looking for facts about the medieval pilgrimage, the book can sometimes be a little bit frustrating. Although Lack throws out tantalizing anecdotes and details, its structure around the pilgrim narrative keeps her from any larger and potentially interesting digressions about the factual aspects. I would have appreciated more background about topics such as the history/politics of the region, the coquillards, etc. Many of these items are addressed in the footnotes, but I would have appreciated pointers to further reading by subject area instead of just a general bibliography at the back.

A well-written and interesting book, which should appeal to readers interested in the pilgrimage to Compostela, medieval history, or religious history.

Some improvements but still shallow and unrealistic

Kaplan's 2017 version of its GRE guide is better than the previous version, but it's still not a book I'd recommend for those who care about maximizing their scores.

Things I liked:

- the vocabulary section has been expanded, and has some useful strategies for learning new words.

- there is finally some discussion (after 6 years of ignoring them) of "critical reasoning" questions, including those which ask you to strengthen / weaken an argument

- the reading comprehension section is improved in terms of the depth with which passages are analyzed

Things I don't like:

- Kaplan questions and passages aren't realistic practice for the real test. They're too straightforward and have some weird deviations from the way real questions are written. Even if this book had a million practice questions and tests, they'd be of little use, since they're not realistically written.

- Kaplan strategies aren't very robust. They make a lot more sense when applied to Kaplan questions than when applied to real GRE questions.

- The book claims that it's all you need when its editors know very well that supplementing with ETS (the company that writes the GRE) materials would be more effective. But they also know that students often just buy one GRE prep book...so they don't mention the ETS books.

- Many of the covered math concepts just get a cursory treatment - maybe fine for those who just need a reminder - but insufficient for people who need to really learn certain things. Other tested math concepts are skipped altogether.

Overall, this book is not what it claims to be: "exactly what you need to score higher". What you ACTUALLY need is the ETS GRE books, which are the only books with official GRE questions.

For strategies and extra practice beyond the ETS books, I'd eschew anything that the big companies (like Kaplan, The Princeton Review, etc.) write and instead check out Manhattan Prep's GRE series. It's much more in-depth and consequently much more useful.

About the Author
Ryan Ford is an athlete, coach, author, and entrepreneur. He is flabbergasted and grateful to have become a scholar in the art of urban obstacle touching. Ryan's parkour journey began in 2004 in his hometown, Golden, Colorado. In 2006, Ryan established the first formal parkour classes in the Western Hemisphere while also becoming one of the first professional parkour athletes in North America. He has performed and coached worldwide for various organizations including the New Yorker, TEDx, ESPN, and the U.S. Embassy. In 2009, Ryan earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder while also opening his first parkour gym, APEX Movement in Denver. Since then, APEX Movement has grown to five locations with more on the way. After establishing APEX, Ryan founded ParkourEDU which is a coaching certification and online platform dedicated to teaching the best parkour methods.
Through his various ventures, Ryan has taught parkour to tens of thousands of people, including coaches, athletes, elite military forces, underprivileged youth, and seniors. Although Ryan's specialty is parkour, he regularly cross-trains in weightlifting, bouldering, and acrobatics and he is a two-time competitor on the show American Ninja Warrior. Additionally, he loves to continue his movement education through certifications and extensive research in areas such as corrective exercise, CrossFit, pole fitness, hand balancing, plyometrics, and barefoot running. By far the best Parkour strength book out there

This is going to be a lengthy review - I hope it helps people, because if you know what you're expecting, this book will be amazing for you. Here's the short version:

What you can expect:
1. The most comprehensive list of parkour-specific strength exercises around.
2. Thorough written descriptions of each exercise accompanied by one or two pictures
3. Well-thought-out discussion on training for strength in parkour.

What you should not expect:
1. Descriptions of specific parkour techniques (some basic vaults are covered, but that's not the focus of the book)
2. Pre-made workout programs (addressed below)

So, I've only had this book for about 24 hours, and I'm already in love with it. I've followed Ryan back since the days of demon drills, and Ben for a couple of years as well, and both of them are really leaders in the parkour scene. I ordered this book the moment it came out, and I've flipped through it a few times while reading it cover to cover.

The first and most important aspect of the book is this: this is a book about strength training, specifically geared towards those interested in parkour. It is not a book about parkour, specifically. While they do cover a few basic vaults, you won't see step-by-step breakdowns of parkour techniques in here. Instead, you find out how to strengthen your body in ways that will directly apply to your parkour practice.

The early focus of the book is on thee primary bodyweight exercises: the pull-up, the dip, and the squat. The reason for this is that they give you an upper body pulling, upper body pushing, and leg workout. Each exercise is given both easy and very challenging variations, so you can work on your strength wherever you currently are.

The book also has extensive sections on quadrupedal movement, mobility, and plyometrics, all of which are important to the parkour practitioner If you are looking to prepare your body for parkour, this is the book for you.

One of the aspects of the book that I really like is the challenges at the end of each chapter. These are just short sections that provide assessments for you to gauge your progress. They feel like really concrete ways to see how you're doing.

The book concludes with a discussion of programming. While the authors provide some very useful, though basic, guidelines, they are intentional in not laying out specific plans for people to follow. Instead, they give readers the tools and ideas to make their own programming. While there is a part of me that likes having someone tell me exactly what to do, the authors are right in saying that they don't feel comfortable providing specifics without actually knowing and working with the individual. In my mind, this is just good coaching. It would have perhaps been nice to see a complete sample workout to model, but all the information you need is there.

There's a lot more in the book that I haven't covered, but I feel like those are the main sections. I was very excited for this book, and I'm not disappointed. These are two of the best parkour coaches in the US, and I'm grateful for their work.

I'm an aerialist looking to broaden my skill set and found this gem. As a middle aged female, it's a little daunting to train with a largely teen make group in the gym. This book has given me a whole bunch to practice and master with easy to follow photos and great descriptions.

Exercises that actually help you move better.

This book is great for beginners and experienced parkour athletes. As a beginner parkour athlete I relied heavily on Ryan's youtube channel the help me develop the skill I needed to begin moving my body in ways that would improve my function. Not just make me look good. I am in the "over 30years old" crowd who was older when starting parkour. This strength development explained in this book is paramount for preventing injury. I realized that years of confining myself to gym weight training had left gaping holes in my stability and strength. The exercises in this book have significantly improved my function in day to day living, and in recreation.

As a sports medicine doctor, I see the value in developing a strong resilient body. All day long I take care of injuries due to over specialized training. The ability to navigate obstacles and move efficiently will benefit any athlete. I recommend this book to my Division 1 athletes to help them learn how to move in ways that will prevent injury and help them develop a sustainable fitness program that is fun and will keep them in top shape.

This book is also a must if you are a strength and conditioning coach or personal trainer. It will give variety an fun to a very good workout. This book scales the exercises so you can use them with athletes of any ability. Ryan and Ben are leading the field in moving the benefits of parkour training into the mainstream. Many Division 1 strength and conditioning coaches already use many of these exercises to help thier athletes achieve peak performance and injury prevention. This book will help them incorporate these exercises more effectively and help prevent injury.

In short this book is a must if you exercise, want to exercise, teach other to exercise, or you just want to be able to have better quality movement in daily living.
