Next Installment in a Very Engaging Series

I always find myself enjoying M Louisa Locke's engaging, cozy mysteries, set in Victorian San Francisco and this new novel is no exception. They are written with a tremendous sense of historical accuracy coupled with a real affection for her characters on the part of the writer. In Bloody Lessons we revisit the charming, clever Annie Fuller running her comfortable boarding house, while dispensing astute financial advice in the guise of a psychic medium. This is the only way in which she can get her clients to take her seriously, at this time - but you get the feeling that things are about to change!
The novel begins with Laura Dawson, the young sister of Nate Dawson, the attractive lawyer with whom we (and Annie) have become familiar throughout the first two novels in the series. Laura has come to San Francisco to take up a position as a teacher but almost immediately she has two deeply distressing experiences, which will colour the rest of the story. Soon, Annie and Nate are drawn into a complex series of events which centre on the school system and a number of pernicious anonymous letters. This is 'cozy crime' so there is little to shock or disturb, but a very great deal to interest - and I always find this writer's work interesting. In this case, the school setting fascinated me, and since the novel is set in a place which is quite unfamiliar to me, this added an extra dimension of gentle pleasure. These make great bed-time reading. They won't give you nightmares, but you will quickly feel a part of Nate and Annie's world. And as the novel gathers pace towards the end, this becomes a genuine page turner - not least because the writer has allowed us to become so fond of her well drawn cast of characters.

Ms Locke does it again!

San Francisco comes alive in this latest addition to M Louisa Locke's cozy Victorian mystery series. Each book in the series not only provides an entertaining `whodunnit' but also uses social issues of the times to drive the plot such as servants' working conditions (Maids of Misfortune) and spiritualism (Uneasy Spirits). This time the political machinations behind the public education system provides the catalyst for events that lead the ever resourceful Annie Fuller and her fiancé, Nate Dawson, into an investigation to discover the identity of a blackmailer. In addition to this story thread, Locke has introduced Laura Dawson, Nate's sister, who has her own mystery to uncover. The strong willed, ambitious Laura (good heavens, a woman who wants to eschew marriage so she can go to university?) is a welcome addition to the cast of characters as her relationship with a civil war veteran reminds the reader how soon after this conflict Bloody Lessons is set, and highlights the age-old plight of returning soldiers who are expected to transition easily back into civilian life after suffering psychological and physical trauma.

Locke deftly weaves the back story of her other two novels into the book so that it can easily be read `out of order', however, those who have already been introduced to the lively and sociable residents of Annie's boarding house will enjoy learning more about their lives, and indeed, some of their darker secrets.

The romance between Annie and Nate is not without continuing complications despite the fact they are officially courting. The etiquette of the era is well described when it comes to the couple observing `seemly' behaviour but Locke does a nice job of conveying how both Nate and Annie are finding it increasingly harder not to get `hot and bothered' even when they are determined to meet societal standards.

I can highly recommend Bloody Lessons to all those who love historical mysteries where intrigue and romance are entwined with meticulous research, engaging characters and a well-paced plot.

Excellent character-driven mystery

Locke is one of my favorite writers. Her in-depth knowledge of the time period (she's a retired history prof) gives her books real historical flavor, the mystery is top-notch, but it is her handling of the characters, even the supporting cast, that make this book (and the whole series) really special. Writing characters that are engaging to the modern reader, but true to their time period is tricky. As someone who has read a lot of primary source material (e.g. letters from various war fronts, period newspaper articles, etc.) in addition to being an avid reader of historical fiction, I find Locke's handling of her characters simply amazing. Many of her characters have uncommon (but never impossible or too modern) goals or ideas for their times, but it is often that conflict between the times and her characters' personalities and foibles which drives the plot.

The story in Bloody Lessons is set against a backdrop of a very real political and social crisis in San Francisco in the late 1870's and early 1880's. In many ways the actual events were far more sensational and unbelievable than the happenings in the book. The mystery revolves around teachers and teaching during a time when the public school system in California was the focus of an intense partisan conflict.

The primary character, Annie Fuller, is a widowed boarding house owner and part-time clairvoyant whose newest boarder, Laura Dawson, is assaulted in the alley behind the boarding house. Laura is not only a teacher, but also the younger sister of Annie's love interest, lawyer Nate Dawson. The situation only gets murkier from there.

In the course of dealing with the mystery and the subsequent events, Annie, Nate, Laura, and a few other characters (no spoilers) all learn things about themselves that go beyond the events of the mystery. Much to my surprise, I found myself more interested in the personal journeys than the resolution of the mystery. But then the mystery was solved and it was very well-done. Without giving anything away, I will say if you find yourself questioning the motives of the villain, I would suggest you read up on the background crisis in the San Francisco school system at that time.

not really "new"

This book was NOT edited according to the new CS format. It does NOT help with listing history/physical findings under each separate differential (unless you read the case discussion which only glosses over this info). Do not waste your time if you are looking for the most updated information, but it is good for case examples (but you can purchase the older version cheaper if you just want case examples since medicine itself has not changed). Refer to the USMLE website for advice on the new CS format and read it all (not very long). First Aid should have waited a couple weeks to release this, or at least should have gotten advance info from USMLE before publication..big disappointment. I gave two stars because it did not teach me anything new and I'm still left wondering how the NEW CS is going to be...so it was only half helpful hence the 2/5.

Decent material but poorly organized & the test has changed.

Overall I was dissappointed with this book. The material in each case was a good review of differentials and diagnostic modalities but the layout of the cases made no sense to me. It would have been perfect if I had a friend who was a standardized patient who could act out each scenario because it started each case with an SP checklist that gave away things like "Act like you are in pain when the examinee presses on your right, upper abdomen." Trying to use this to study from, I felt like it was giving away things before I had even gotten to the history. I wish they would reorganize the cases so that the information is presented like you would receive it in a patient encounter....chief complaint, then HPI, PMH, etc.....then physical exam findings....then the write up and tests ordered for the case.

Another big problem I had with the book was that the exam now requires you to justify each entry on your differential diagnosis with information from your history and physical exam. Using this book to prepare didn't really help me prepare for this part...the book simply focuses on which items should be on a differential and which tests to order. I felt like I was a little burned by this on test day because my justifications for some of the differential items was really weak.

Finally, a word on the cases themselves....the cases in the book were vastly misleading from what I got on exam day. Those in the book are deliberately vague and present symptoms that easily lead you to many items on your differential. For example, a case in the book might have a woman with dyspareunia who has had prior surgery but also suggests cyclical pain, but also has a history of being assaulted. So you could easily come up with several things: adhesions, endometriosis, anxiety, etc. On test day, the actual cases were very cut and dry pointing to a single diagnosis with nothing even in the ROS to point to anything else so justifying items on the differential was tenuous at times.

In summary, the book had some good material for review but I would not use it exclusively to study from.

What a prolific attempt at gouging medical students! Don't be fooled, this is exactly the same as 3rd edition(published 2010), with the exception of 3 new cases. That doesn't warrant a "new" edition in my book (no pun intended).

Drawing is a very fragile, sensitive and powerful thing. Learning to draw is like starting to talk or to play an instrument. At first, it is about following a natural inclination, which, with disciplined cultivation, gradually undergoes both small and great progress and soon provides thrilling satisfaction. This path of knowledge becomes more and more fascinating and indispensable from the very moment it begins.

The human body—whether drawn from reality or invented, interpreted or imagined—is the main object of representations, and most artistic pursuits revolve around it. Regularly practicing drawing from real life is an endless and invigorating source of technical, compositional and formal inspiration, as well as a substantial element of art. And the human body is simultaneously a point of departure and point of arrival in such a process. Drawing a human figure is not so much a question of representation as it is of affinity with the body to be discovered; it is the response of the observer's body to that of the observed. And sight is not the only sense that is used; on its own it can easily be deceived when it is not acting as a vehicle for the accumulated experience of the other senses.

In this book you will not find instructions on how you should draw, but instead suggestions to begin drawing, and in particular, drawing the human body. It is aimed at those who, either because they attend drawing schools or because they feel attracted to drawing, want to set off down a path of knowledge; at those who already draw and are interested in discovering other points of view; and at those who teach drawing and are looking to find an integration of methods and new associations aimed at developing creative exploration.

I love the exercises and advice in this book. It is less of a how to book and wouldn't recommend it to people that one a book like that. However, this book did help me improve as a gesture drawing artist more than a lot of books that I have bought.

In some, the multicultural families and kids smile happily for the camera; in others, they seem entirely absorbed in their activities. The numerous pictures, varying in size, proportions and quality, show children horsing around, celebrating or concentrating (a few appear washed-out or slightly blurry). The premise is that all over the world, people are helping one another, and in doing so, they are bringing about peace: "Somewhere today...someone is being a friend instead of fighting" or "someone is fixing old toys to give to new friends." Each double-page spread provides an example of a positive action in large type, along with several candid photographs of the individuals involved in bringing it about. Terribly earnest in his approach but direct in intent, storyteller and schoolteacher Thomas writes simple, declarative sentences: "Somewhere today . . . someone is being a friend instead of fighting . . . someone is teaching his little sister to ride a bike." Each sentence occupies a full-page spread, with a number of photographs of children illustrating the activity mentioned. The photographs themselves, which range from clear close-ups to artfully blurred or angled shots, show a reassuringly varied cast of children and adults of many races and cultures. For "joining a friend's celebration," children break a pinata; for "learning to do things in a different way," a boy learns to use chopsticks from his Asian friends. A slightly hokey ending, in which children are shown reading this very book "and thinking about making the world a better place," is in tune with the book's gentle didacticism. GraceAnne A. Very nice message in this book

I was looking for a book to help children understand the concept of peace and found this one. It is very easy to understand the message and the children in my class really enjoyed hearing it and sharing their thoughts.

Exciting and Touching Story of a Walk

I really feel as though I took this journey with Peter Jenkins. He is a hiker who can make you feel as though you're on the trail with him. I fell in love with him and I fell in love with his dog, Cooper. I came to realize why dogs have been referred to as man's best friends. I'd thought from the title that Jenkins would be walking the entire time, not realizing that he would need to stop and work in order to continue to survive. On the whole, Jenkins was treated well. Ask yourself if you ever imagined that a white man in the seventies could move into a black neighborhood, live with a black family, and go to church with them every Sunday and become like one of the family? Or could you imagine a mountain man who raises all his own food, a virtual hermit, welcoming Jenkins into his home and treating him like a son? Still, there are some scary experiences on the road--some close calls--ones that will make your heart pound a little faster.

Jenkins enjoys neighborly love in this book and by the end falls in love two more times (I won't spoil the story by providing details). Let me just say that I feel this book has it all--a little of every type of connection a healthy man or woman needs for the good life. Dog lovers and even those who have never felt a deep connection with animals of any sort (the exception for me would be my brother's dog in recent years) will feel an emotional investment in this story of a man and his beloved dog and the many wonderful, amazing, and occasionally scary people they meet.

One of the best wanderlust-inspiring books

Let me tell you about this book. I got it solely because of the title (and the dog). I have had my own little rescue for about a year now, and this book pulled at my heart strings. I needed something to refuel my wanderlust and this was just the thing. It inspired me to move across country, focus on myself, and begin my own journey (with my pup). I laughed audibly at this book, cried, and have already reread it. I sent my father a copy to read as well. I can't stress how incredible this book is.

It was okay

I kept hearing about how you just had to read this book so I finally did. I enjoyed it okay. I got a little tired of his highly dramatic writing. Some incidences just didn't ring true for me--seemed like fiction. I don't think it is a hiking must read as a lot of people claim. I will probably read some of his other books since they are pretty inexpensive.

This took place in the 70's. I did like that his goal was to learn more about the U.S. and he hiked with an open mind and was very pleasantly surprised. He decided that this country is a good place with good people. I do think a lot of people who hate this country now days should do the same sort of hiking. I think they would find out it is still a good country with good people.

I just got the book and haven't had time to read yet. It is almost new without marks. It is a required textbook so maybe there is little point arguing the contents...

Someone who would like to do undergraduate research?

This book is very simple to understand molecular biology work in the lab. Actually, the real advantage of this book is each chapter has an assignment (called "praticum" in this book) and that could be tried to learn DNA work in the lab. This book has included DNA works such as PCR, cloning, transfection (and transformation) and so on, except protein work such as protein purification, SDS-PAGE gel etc.. If any undergraduate student who would like to do independent research or undergrad research, this book would be helpful to figure out what kind of real techniques should be required based on your molecular biology background by your class.

Not hackwork

This is an old book, but still one of the best. Hacking writes like a dream about extremely complicated issues. His discussion of Davidson and Tarksi is still streets ahead of some of the more recent book length discussions that get you lost really early. The chapter on Wittgenstein, is, unfortunately, not very good and way out of date. But the rest could still be given to (let's say) 2nd year students working on 20th century analytic philosophy, or the famed elusive informed citizen with a philosophical bent.

Not an Introductory Book

As with all of Hacking's books, it is well written and researched. However, it is not nearly as simple to understand as some of his other writings. I have taken courses one course each in logic, philosophy of psychiatry, and linguistics, and have done a good deal of reading on my own. That did NOT suffice. There is much discussion of early modern philosophy. I would not recommend this book unless you have some background in Hobbes, Locke, Descartes, etc., as well as some knowledge of twentieth century contemporary analytic philosophy.

This book is just barely out of the reach of someone who is interested and an avid reader. Something along the lines of a minor in philosophy is needed.
