Luciano Alves

Luciano Alves is Brazilian. He lives in the city of Porto Alegre in southern Brazil. He has been a Zabbix evangelist since 2007. Since 1994, he has been working to support the ICT infrastructure using his expertise in targeting and monitoring platforms. Luciano has had Zabbix professional certifications since 2008, and in 2012, he became one of the first official instructors outside of Zabbix SIA. He has trained over 200 professionals from different countries (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Ecuador, Chile, Spain, and Colombia) to work with the Zabbix monitoring platform. He is the founder of Unirede Solucoes Corporativas, one of the main global partners of Zabbix SIA and currently the only premium partner in all of the Americas. Luciano is also a speaker at open source events, always talking about Zabbix. Besides this, he is a moderator of the official Zabbix forums in Portuguese and Spanish, and has worked on the translation of the official documentation into Portuguese.

Not only performance help also helpfull as general overview

What I like most about this book is that it is short and quickly to read. But it is full of helpfull informations regarding Zabbix perfomance AND the Zabbix structure in total. So no bla bla around the information.
The booked helped me as an "experienced starter" with Zabbix to get a better picture what is in which relation to all the other components of the system.
So it is worth not only if you have performance issues but also to get a good background on all the Zabbix components.
The tips and things to considere are all clear and can be directly used even the author says that the exact tuning values depends on your structure. But you can copy them to your site and from the book you learn how to tweak them for you and how to monitor them. As my team mate is the Zabbix pro I trusted him a lot but after reading this book I found a lot of things we could have done better from the start. And chaning them now helped us to avoid some pitfalls.
So even if the content seems to be for the Zabbix pros it will help us beginners also very good.

Must have for every Zabbix Administrator, approaches every aspect with good detail

It covers all must know topics and components:
- Database
- Zabbix server
- Zabbix proxy
- Items and triggers
- Storage
- Webserver
- Php
- Operating system

It describes in higher details how every component interact with each other, how to estimate the size of your infrastructure, hardware for each piece, predict database and organic growth. How to construct and customize templates, why you should do it, how to monitor Zabbix health, and so on.

If you already manage a big environment, you can get new ideas, consolidate others and find new ways to improve.
If you don't, it will be of great help to get to know some best practices, learn to avoid some problems and/or how to deal with some that you still hit.

I almost took one star off of it because of when the book approaches the DBSyncer parameter, it's not mentioned how it does behave in great detail. What the book misses, is that DBSyncer does so by locking HistoryCache by itemid, calculates trends. Sometimes it does generate a bottleneck and does not perform well enough. This is hard to monitor, but still very important. It's better described on https://support.zabbix.com/browse/ZBX-9201.

Still a great book, though. With it, got few new insights, adopted the use of php accelerators and validated many other aspects of current implementation.

An must read for every Zabbix administrator/user

This is an very good book about tuning your Zabbix environment. Most books about Zabbix will explain how you monitor environment with items, triggers and web scenarios and how you should do this. But this book will only talk about these things when it is related about performance. Why for example is ".last()" better for performance instead of using "avg()"?. Also your environment/hardware where Zabbix is installed is described in this book. The database is very important in your setup and a whole chapter on tuning is dedicated to this.

I personally liked the chapters "Chapter 3: Tuning the Zabbix Server" and "Chapter 10: Monitoring the Health of Zabbix". Chapter 3 is about the triggers I mentioned earlier and buffers and caches. I never found some clear information about these caches and buffers and what they do. Chapter 10 is about the health of Zabbix itself and basically describes the "Template App Zabbix Server" (And Proxy) templates in Zabbix what they mention/do.

The author mentioned why he only focused on performance tuning for MySQL, but it would be nice in next releases if there is an chapter about tuning the PostgreSQL database. I was lucky, but I know people who have PostgreSQL as database server who can skip an chapter in this book.

I really liked reading this book and is written very nice. I will definitely recommend this book to other Zabbix administrators/users.

Same material in 1988 edition!

For those of us looking for new up-to-date technical information in the process field we will have to go elsewhere. This book contains the same basic information as in the first edition. While it has some good material for learning beginning theoretical process control at the technical level it is a waste of money if you are interested in modern technology.

A good book for beinners but take a look at your course req

This was one of the first books i read on process control.Whether or not you should buy the book would depend on what your course demands.
The beauty of the book lies in its lucidity which shows the authors understanding of all the sensors and instruments...the book stresses on the principles of working of all the instruments. i understood every single transducer I learnt about in the book.Another plus point of the book is that it is self-sufficient, in that you dont have to take another book while reading this one.It starts off by discussing all that you need to know about OP-Amp circuits for process control and even digital electronics.
My course in Process Control demanded a very high degree of detail in most of the process control mechnanisms and transducers so i didnt find everything I needed in this book.But it covered my syllabus to the greatest extent of all the books and explained it in a beautiful manner.

Decent book

Worked great for my class, what little we used it. I'm a MET major that is required to take this electrical course, so it was a little outside my field of study. The book wasn't too bad, and the Eastern Education Edition (International) was actually recommended by our professor. Did everything we needed it to do.

Leland Ryken (PhD, University of Oregon) is professor of English at Wheaton College in Illinois, where he has twice received the "teacher of the year" award.



Tremper Longman III (PhD, Yale University) is the Robert H. Gundry Professor of Biblical Studies and the chair of the Religious Studies department at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, where he lives with his wife, Alice. He is the Old Testament editor for the revised Expositor's Bible Commentary and general editor for the Story of God Bible Commentary Old Testament and has authored many articles and books on the Psalms and other Old Testament books.

Overall Useful Collection

This book is a collection of essays on how to read the Bible well from a literary perspective. Essays are very mixed in quality: some are extremely insightful, others trite (e.g., the essay on Ruth offers generalities from a quasi-feminist point of view while offering very little reflection on the actual text); most are true to the text, though a few ignore clear elements in the text to support a bias (e.g., the essay on Esther makes Vashdi and Haman's wife out to be heroines only by ignoring key literary elements). Some essays are dry and shed little real insight on how the literary elements of the text contribute to meaning. Yet with that said, the good essays (of which there are a fair number), make the book as a whole a worthwhile read. How does one read Biblical poetry well? What literary qualities guide us to understanding Ecclestiastes and Song of Songs? How does literary intent help us understand some of the differences in accounts in Kings and Chronicles? etc. I found the essays on Genesis, I & II Samuel, Ezra/Neh., Ecclestiastes, Song of Songs, Parables, and Revelation most useful: those at least, along with fragments elsewhere in the book, make it worthwhile for improved Biblical understanding.

A collection of essays showing the Bible's literary value.

Each book of the Bible is examined for its literary value by different contributers who are scholars (Biblical and literary) in their respective field. Although the two main genres contained in the Bible- poetry and narrative- are emphasized, other genres are also examined. Layman or expert, student or teacher will all benefit from reading this literary exposition of the Bible. I recommend Ryken's and Longman's book to anyone wishing to expand his knowledge of various literary genres and also willing to have his present view of the Bible challenged. A Christian may be startled by the literary freedom displayed through the writings of each Biblical author and the non-Christian can appreciate the beauty of the Bible as a literary work.

Incomplete complete guide to the Bible.

This book contains various essays about different aspects of literary structure of the Bible. Is this complete guide to the Bible? Not at all! The title of this book is too big for this item. It seems this book is like a collection of lectures from the Bible conference. Quality of essays are uneven. Some essays are excellent, but some are so so.

About the Author
David Royse is a professor in the College of Social Work at the University of Kentucky. He earned his Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1980. This book is well written

I am enjoying the learning and the writing style. As a social work student I share a common fear of anything math related. This book takes the intimidation factor out. I am glad to recommend it to anyone who wants to study research in Social work. If it happens to be your text book, then you are in for a treat.
